Welcome to our world!

I was sitting at the dinner table this evening trying desperately hard not to laugh myself silly while Tristan was trying out his latest toilet humor, Jessica was virtually choking on her pancakes and Keith was looking less than amused about it all……….which really is a bit of a turn around as I am the one normally looking disapprovingly whilst Keith adds to Tristan’s toilet humor repertoire with great glee. It has taken me most of the night to settle down from the hysteria and set to the task of starting our blog. This is what it is really about though – a ‘this is what we are up to on the farm’, where hopefully you will be able to find out loads of interesting things about life at Orbost, life on Skye, and perhaps a few more amusing tales and videos for some 9 year old style entertainment!

For the last 7 years, Keith and I have been building a business at Orbost based on the principles of slow food production – the aim is to produce the best quality, fantastic tasting meat products from slowly reared, traditional breed animals – it is simple food, and food with provenance – and we are privileged enough to be able to work the land, care for the animals, and produce this food in one of the more beautiful (and at times more challenging) settings in the world – Orbost on the Isle of Skye in Scotland.

In March we appeared in a BBC2 series called Monty Hall’s Great Escape – it was a great project to be involved with, where we could share our years of hard learnt knowledge with Monty Halls while he escaped from the bright lights of the city to live on the West Coast of Scotland for 6 months and try his hand at the crofting life. Monty took charge of some of our Soay Sheep and two of our beautiful Iron Age Pigs, and we were there along the way to help him out and advise him.

There is always so much going on on the farm! We hope you’ll join us on our journey…….oh and occasionally laugh like a maniacal 7 and 9 year old who have just heard the funniest toilet joke ever……
